Transplant Services
Transplant Services provides a multidisciplinary team approach with a focus on patient care throughout every step of the transplant process. We were proud to achieve multiorgan transplant facility certification in 2016, with the addition of pancreas transplants to our kidney transplant services to better serve residents of New Mexico, as well as surrounding areas. For patients who suffer from renal failure, a kidney transplant can be a life-changing gift, and for patients who suffer with diabetes type 1 and renal failure, a simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplant (SPK) can also be life changing.

What is renal failure and how is it treated?
Renal (kidney) failure is a gradual loss of kidney function. If your kidneys are not working well, this can cause a dangerous level of fluid or waste products to build up in your body. Chronic kidney failure (CKD) can be caused by many different things such as diabetes, high blood pressure, polycystic kidney disease or recurring urinary tract infections (UTIs). While treatments for each stage of kidney disease are different, once you have progressed to end-stage renal disease (ESRD), your options are limited to either dialysis (an ongoing treatment to filter toxins) or a kidney transplant. Presbyterian’s Transplant Services can help you understand your individual treatment needs and decide if an organ transplant is right for you.
Transplant Services partners with New Mexico Donor Services, a leading organ procurement organization, and we are certified by the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) and Medicare (CMS).
Presbyterian also offers Living Kidney Donation options. We are affiliated with the National Kidney Registry (NKR) and offer many options to those in need of a kidney transplant, as well as those interested in living kidney donation. If you are interested in finding out more about becoming a living kidney donor, please visit our Donor Page FAQ’s and Patient Resources.
