Intensive Outpatient Program for Substance Abuse

Presbyterian’s Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a Level II drug and alcohol treatment program based on the principles of the Matrix Model and the peer support group model. The clinical benefits of IOP include increased duration of sobriety, relapse prevention support, enhanced self-awareness for recovery, therapeutic milieu, and patient responsibility.

Program Description:
Core IOP treatment components include assessments by both a licensed therapist and the program psychiatrist, treatment planning, pharmacotherapy, client and family education, toxicology screening, and program outcome evaluation with discharge planning.  Additional treatment elements may include structured cognitive and behavioral interventions, experiential exercises, art therapy, stress reduction, behavioral modification and diet and exercise education.

IOP groups are offered three times weekly, for a total of 18 sessions, and are staffed by experienced, licensed addiction therapists, master’s level or above.  The treatment process addresses the dynamics of addiction; the process of treatment and recovery; medical aspects of addiction;  the importance of abstinence; maximizing the use of support groups;  minimizing risky behaviors;  the importance of spirituality in recovery;   the roles of nutrition, exercise, leisure, and recreation;  relationship skills, conflict resolution, assertiveness and communication skills;  family dynamics of addiction;  refusal and relapse management skills; and the development of an external source of support.

A screening assessment is required before starting the IOP program. This can generally be done within one business day from the time of initial inquiry or contact. Patients with opiate dependency who are enrolled in the program in good standing may also be eligible for treatment with Suboxone.
We use a combination of educational and therapeutic approaches in our program.
