Surgical Specialties

Surgeons typically spend 4 or 5 years in training, after medical school, learning surgical techniques specific to certain body parts or organ systems.

For instance, a gynecological surgeon treats operative conditions of the female reproductive system. Except under emergency situations, surgeons are usually accessed by referral from a primary care provider when, after a history and physical examination, a surgical condition is suspected. The surgeon is also trained to treat many related diseases without surgery.

General Surgery - This surgical specialty focuses on the treatment of the internal abdominal organs, hernias, and sometimes thyroid conditions using surgical, microscopic, and laparoscopic techniques.  The general surgeon may also be trained in vascular surgery and surgery for certain types of cancers in the abdominal area.

OB/Gyn - The PMG Obstetrics/Gynecology (OB/Gyn) service provides evaluation and treatment of female patients, who are pregnant, with their prenatal and postnatal care and the delivery of their babies.  The service also provides surgical and non-surgical treatment for disorders of the female reproductive system.  PMG OB/Gyn consults for primary care providers, hospitalists, and other specialists, including emergency room physicians.

Orthopedic Surgery - The orthopedic surgeon evaluates and treats acute, traumatic, chronic, and overuse injuries of the muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, and joints by both surgical and non-surgical means.  An orthopedic surgeon may also limit the practice to a sub-specialty area such as hand or spine.

Neurosurgery - This is a discipline of medicine and that specialty of surgery which provides the operative and non-operative management of the central and peripheral nervous system and its related support structures and blood supply.  Included are the brain, spinal cord, certain glands, tumors, and blood vessels.  They treat patients who have head/brain trauma, aneurysms, and certain malformations.

Ear, Nose, Throat - The otolaryngologist is a specialist who focuses on conditions of the ear, nose, throat, head and neck.  The conditions include trauma, malformations, perforations, and cancer.

Podiatry - Podiatry is a field in healthcare devoted to the study and treatment of disorders of the foot and ankle.  A podiatrist uses surgical and non-surgical means to treat a variety of conditions such as plantar fasciitis, bunions, hammer toes, ankle instability, and trauma.

Cardiothoracic/Vascular - This specialty is involved with the surgical treatment of diseases and conditions of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. Visit our Heart Center website.

Plastic - The surgical specialty that deals with the reconstruction of facial and body tissue that requires a reshaping or remolding due to disease, a defect, or disorder - in order to approximate a normal appearance while reducing scarring and disfigurement is called plastic surgery. Cosmetic plastic surgery is performed in order to alter/improve appearance.
